I created another first yesterday. I was asked by a son to create a large Catholic rosary to be released in honor of the one year anniversary of his mother’s passing.
I’ve always said good balloon sculptures should be emotional. They don’t just need to be happy or silly, but they can bring about something deeper as well.
Religious symbolism is important to so many people and expresses their relationships, not only with God, but with one another as well.
Whatever you’re looking to celebrate or honor give Higher Hope Balloons a call and I look forward to creating the perfect idea for you.
I had a fantastic time at Patriot Academy in Austin, TX. It is a week long mock congress where students learn how the political process works. I also had the privilege of decorating the final night banquet. This was a great honor as Rafael Cruz, father of Texas Senate GOP candidate Ted Cruz, was presented with the Torch of Freedom award. Several Wounded Warriors were also honored as they helped pass the torch to the next generation. Among the veterans was a 92 year old who served in World War II. Thank God for men willing to put their life on the line for freedom.
I was just watching the latest Up All Night and they had a balloon guy at their Mommy and Me type group. it was a good reminder of how much I love working at these mom groups. So if you know a mother’s group out there that needs a balloon guy please send them my way!
With the Iowa Caucus tomorrow I thought I’d share a photo from the election four years ago. Below is a photo of John McCain and a couple of staunch looking Secret Service guys with a balloon I made in McCain’s likeness. This is probably my most famous balloon sculpture because the Associated Press (AP) and TMZ picked and aired it a few times. TMZ’s caption was “Full of Hot Air:
Looks like he’s finally found a qualified running mate.”
Whoever you’re supporting this election cycle remember to get out and vote! And just as important remember to have great balloon decorations, balloon entertainment, and maybe even a balloon drop at your celebrations!
This was a really fun pirate themed birthday party I did this year. For the birthday boy I made a pirate mask, sword, and pirate ship. Not only did the birthday boy love it, but all the other guests got a big kick out of it as well.

Last week I had a great time creating decor for a sweet 16. I love when my balloon creations work so well with the rest of the decor. Check out the photos!
The vast majority of the time that I work an event I have a long line of people willing to wait to receive a balloon. Most of the time (unless Elmo is there) I have the largest group of people, of all ages, surrounding me.
So why is that? Is it really because what I’m making is really that cool? I don’t think so. Don’t get me wrong I make some pretty amazing sculptures and love make new ones off the top of my head, but that isn’t the main reason.
The reason people really wait up to two hours at large events for customized balloons (yep, that has really happened) is because it creates an emotional connection.
For kids it is fun and mysterious. For adults it is a reminder of their childhood imaginations.
Usually the goal is create happy and joyful emotions. Even balloon decor helps bring about those emotional responses of grandeur and elegance.
Last week though I had a goal to bring about a different emotion, fear. I have a friend that is on the very scared of spiders. Now it isn’t to the point of arachnophobia (then it’d be cruel) but she freaks out quite a bit about them.
So another friend had the idea of wearing a giant spider costume for a party. We looked around, but couldn’t find one so instead I told him I would make one. He wasn’t hesitant as first about whether I could actually make it scary, but I convinced him.
I ended up designing and building him a giant black widow costume. It was a lot of fun to make and it turned out great. I loved it and our friend was definitely creeped out about the costume.
I must admit that I was quite proud of myself. It is rare that I get to invoke fear and tears. I guess you’d say it is like the thrill of horror movies. Hmm maybe Stephen King will call me for his next film.
